چکیده

I review the status of the search for extremely metal-poor halo stars with the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). 2 194 candidate metal-poor turnoff stars and 6 133 giants in the magnitude range 14 . B . 17.5 have been selected from 329 (out of 380) HES fields, covering an effective area of 6 400 square degrees in the southern extragalactic sky. Moderate-resolution followup observations for 3 200 candidates have been obtained so far, and ∼ 200 new stars with [Fe/H] < −3.0 have been found, which trebles the total number of such extremely low-metallicity stars identified by all previous surveys. We use VLT-UT2/UVES, Keck/HIRES, Subaru/HDS, TNG/SARG, and Magellan/MIKE for high-resolution spectroscopy of HES metal-poor stars. I provide an overview of the scientific aims of these programs, and highlight several recent results.

An Automated Search for Metal-Poor Halo Stars in the Hamburg/ESO Objective-Prism Survey

An automated search for metal-poor stars is carried out in the course of the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES), which covers the full southern sky at Galactic latitudes |b| & 30◦. As the HES reaches ∼ 1 magnitude deeper and covers areas of the sky which have not been touched by the HK Survey of Beers and collaborators, the total survey volume of the HES represents an increase by a factor...

Low Metallicity Stars in Our Galaxy

The advent of 8 m class telescopes has allowed the detailed spectroscopic study of sizeable numbers of extremely metal-poor Galactic stars which are the witnesses of the formation of the early Galaxy. Their chemical composition displays some distinctive trends which should provide a strong constraint on the physical nature of the first generation(s) of stars and on their nucleosynthetic output....

Finding the First Stars: The Hamburg/ESO Objective Prism Survey

The Hamburg/ESO survey (HES; [4]) is an objective-prism survey for bright quasars based on IIIa-J plates taken with the ESO Schmidt telescope and its 4◦ prism. It covers the total southern extragalactic sky (δ <+2◦. 5; |b| & 30◦). All 380 Schmidt plates (effective area ∼ 7 000 square degrees) have been taken, and have been digitized and reduced in Hamburg. The spectral range of the HES plates i...

Stellar Archaeology: a Keck Pilot Program on Extremely Metal-Poor Stars From the Hamburg/ESO Survey. I Stellar Parameters

In this series of two papers we present a high dispersion spectroscopic analysis of 8 candidate extremely metal poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey and of 6 additional very metal poor stars. We demonstrate that with suitable vetting using moderate-resolution spectra the yield of this survey for stars with [Fe/H] ≤ −3.0 dex is very high; three out of the eight stars observed thus far...

The stellar content of the Hamburg / ESO survey ⋆ III . Field horizontal - branch stars in the Galaxy

We present a sample of 8321 candidate Field Horizontal-Branch (FHB) stars selected by automatic spectral classification in the digital data base of the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. The stars are distributed over 8225 square degrees of the southern sky, at |b| 30 deg. The average distance of the sample, assuming that they are all FHB stars, is 9.8 kpc, and distances of up to ∼ 30 kpc are ...
